My dear step brother came for a long over due holiday visit and, among other things, we talked about his website. This is a sad but all too familiar story with friends and family regarding thier websites.
(By the way, though this cartoon is pretty cool, my step brother is better looking than this cartoon hostage whose illustrating the point.)
In the past, people bought the idea (hook, line and sinker) that they had to have a web designer create a beautiful website – and there are some amazing designers out there. While the websites many times are beautiful, they also can be lacking in searchable content because they’re filled with “flash” rather than readable text. The search engines need readable text to pull your site up in the ranking system.
Form or Function? A Twist of the Knife
Just to twist the knife a little deeper, it was true that you had no control over your site’s function either. The tiniest changes were on the clock and you were charged top dollar.
Even with all my website expertise, having developed sites since at least 1997, I ended up with one of those “Hostage” websites for one of my bands in 2005. I was horrified that I had to spend money each time I wanted to update our band’s show schedule. It may have made us reluctant to play shows!

His website is a beautiful “class act” just like him – but he wanted to change the price of his wine, and in order to change a few numbers on the website, it cost him $100.00. Why?
